Discussion Questions for Night Songs

Often when we read a book, we just want to be entertained. It can be an activity that takes us from the humdrum of our own lives and allows us a mental vacation. However, I always like to come away from a reading experience with a little more knowledge than I started with whether it’s an historical fiction, romantic suspense, or women’s fiction. In case you feel the same, I’ve created some discussion questions to get you started.

  1. What do you think of the book’s title? How does it relate to the book’s contents? What other title might you choose?
  2. Are there any characters you’d like to deliver a lecture to? If so, who? What would you say to him/her?
  3. Considering we know as Christians that God does not condone divorce, if you were in Charlie’s place, how would you navigate the circumstances of your marriage if you had a husband who habitually cheats?
  4. Have you ever befriended someone like Darlene who has a strong faith in God despite her circumstances? Maybe you can relate to Darlene because of the circumstances in your own life. What do you think accounts for the ability to keep the faith?
  5. Charlie had to move ahead to fulfill a dream the Lord put on her heart—the remodeling of her nana’s farmhouse into a vintage/décor shop. It took courage to step out in faith. Have you ever (or do you now) have a dream that the Lord placed on your heart? What did you have to overcome to achieve it? If you didn’t achieve it, what stopped you?
  6. Can you draw a parallel between Charlie’s spiritual growth and her nana’s dilapidated farmhouse? Explain your answer.
  7. How did the setting impact the story of Night Songs? Would it have been as effective if it took place in a big city?
  8. Share a favorite quote from Night Songs. Why did this quote stand out?
