Often, when I read a book, I am able to take something from it that may help me in my own life. Sometimes, I just want to understand the characters a little better. Discussion questions are often a vehicle to discover what those nuggets might be. You can use them as a supplement to Providence, whether you read the book in a group or on your own.
- Why do you think Melissa was so unaware of the struggle her husband was going through?
- At what point in the book do the characters (Melissa, Duncan, and Emily) shift from being self-focused to being other-focused? How does that change their situation?
- From the beginning of the book until the end (as mysteries are revealed), there was a clear path to Trevor’s downfall. How can we take a lesson from him and apply it to our own lives?
- Melissa didn’t tell her children the truth about Trevor’s death in the beginning. Do you agree with her decision? Why or why not?
- Duncan’s past colored how he responded to Trevor’s issues. Do you think the decisions he made in light of this were right or wrong? Why or why not?
- What do you think was the most important lesson each of the three voice characters (Melissa, Duncan, and Emily) walked away with by the end of the story?
