Discussion Questions for Shadow Dancing

  1. What do you think of the book’s title? How does it relate to the story? If you were going to choose a different title, what would it be
  2. When reading a book of fiction, I will often get frustrated with a character because of the choices she makes. Are there any characters from Shadow Dancing you would like to deliver a lecture to? If so, what would you say to him/her, and why?
  3. One of the issues in Shadow dancing is helicopter-parenting. You know what that is, right? Usually, it’s the mom who gets accused of this tendency to hover over everything their children do, usually out of fear. Most of us have done this at one time or another—how about you? Can hovering stunt the emotional growth of a child?
  4. Have you ever been in a situation (like Bekah) that made you want to run away? When my first husband walked out on me, my first instinct was to run—to be able to start over where no one knew my history and shame. Has this ever happened to you or someone you care about? If so, what did you do?
  5. Contention in the workplace is not unusual, especially when we work alongside difficult people. Have you, like Bekah, ever had a contentious work relationship? How could getting to know a person change this?
  6. How did Bekah and Mitch differ in the way they handled their grief? Not to generalize, but do you think men and women often respond to hard seasons in different ways? I’m thinking about Bill and Pam Ferrel’s book Men Are Like Waffles—Women Are Like Spaghetti. If you’re married and haven’t read it, it’s an eye-opener.
  7. In Shadow Dancing, Brother Paul takes advantage of a situation to help Bekah not only face her pain but help out a child in need. How can serving other people in their time of need help to take the focus off of our own issues?

You can still preorder Shadow Dancing and receive the bonus of a free story I wrote. It’s called Heart Shadows, and it’s a prequel to Bekah and Mitch’s story set in 1977 Nashville. Click the link here, and choose whether you want the ebook (for $2.99) or the paperback for 30% off and free shipping. Heart Shadows is included in the paperback version, but if you choose the ebook version, you need to fill out the form so my publisher can send it to you. Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and follow the links. Easy peasy!
