Release Date: September, 2012
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up to read and review Shirley Quiring Mozena’s book Second Chances. What I didn’t expect was a memoir of sorts covering Mozena’s two marriages. Wanting to share hope to others in a time of grief is understandable, but I didn’t find this to be a viable theme. This book reads much like a diary or journal with each section titled and dated.
I appreciate Mozena’s story and the heartache she went through losing not only one husband, but two. Most people, if they live a full life, will have to deal with grief and loss. I’ve had more than my share, as well. However, I’m confused about who Mozena’s target audience was intended to be when she had this book published. This is perfect for family and close friends, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the general audience.
The minute details made it a struggle to get through the book. For example, Mozena made a point of detailing out meals, which didn’t pertain at all to the story. What does it matter that she finished her meal with chocolate cake or creme brûlée? I can’t remember what I ate last week, let alone being able to list out meals I had several years ago. She even listed the food served at her late husband’s memorial service. She also detailed people in attendance for holidays or other celebratory events.
I’m giving this book three stars because it is well written. However, it’s not a book I would recommend to anyone. I doubt my own diary would interest anyone but those closest to me. I’m not sure why Mozena’s would be any different.
I was given a complimentary copy for reviewing purposes, however the opinions stated are my own.
About the Author
More from Shirley
They told me there was no hope. How could that be? I’d already lost one husband. Would I have to lose another? We’d had so little time!
Four years earlier—nearly to the day—my high school sweetheart and father of my two children had died. We’d gone through so many struggles. Our marriage was nearly broken. Through courage in facing our faults and selfishness, our marriage was restored. And then, after a six month battle with a terrible virus, my husband died.
I’d never dreamed I’d love again, but it happened. Sx months after our first date, we were married. It seemed like we were still on our honeymoon when the next tragedy happened. Just like that, he was gone.
And then I knew the story needed to be told. For myself. For my children. For anyone who wanted to know. It’s a story of second chances in a restored marriage. In love. In hope for the future and God’s sustaining love and comfort. A story to strengthen your own soul.
