My Review

I struggled at times while reading Cathy Gohlke’s novel The Medallion. The writing was beautiful and the characters were rich and so very real. But I don’t know how anyone can read about the dark and devastating subject of the Holocaust without struggling. And if it’s difficult to read about, it grieves me so deeply to imagine what those persecuted during those horrific years must have felt. How could one not question where God was in such a time?

The Medallion follows the war-torn experiences of two couples—Itzhak and Rosa Dunovich and Sophia and Janek Kumiega. The Dunovich’s are Polish Jews, while Sophia is from England and Janek a Polish non-Jew forced to fight for Britain’s RAF. Sophia is left behind in Poland following her husband’s departure to fight in the war and finds that she cannot stomach the atrocities without putting herself at risk to help.

It is a story of true love, hope and the lengths courageous people will go to in order to do God’s work. The story reminds me of Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, which I found just as emotionally difficult to read. I feel it’s imperative that we are well-educated on the heinous evils of the past in order to avoid such things again in the future.

Cathy Gohlke writes a beautiful, poignant and sad story. It may be fiction, but it is based on truth. Regardless of whether the subject matter is difficult, I give it my highest recommendation. Five stars.

The Medallion was inspired by two true stories—the first was the WWII account of Itzhak Dugin and his Jewish family, persecuted in Lithuania. Their heart-wrenching story made world news when the tunnel from which Itzhak escaped the Nazis was discovered using modern technology.

The second was the story of Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker within Żegota (an underground Polish Council to Aid Jews), who developed a network to rescue children. Despite terrible risks, they smuggled 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto and certain death at the hands of the Nazis, then hid them in Polish homes, convents, churches and hospitals until the end of the war. Approximately 2,000 of those children were found after the war. Theories abound regarding the whereabouts of those missing. I couldn’t help but wonder, and imagine: What became of those 400 to 500 missing children? What became of one?

Set in WWII Poland and post-war England, The Medallion is a story of courage, sacrifice, love, forgiveness and redemption.
