Mysterious Disappearances Taint the Chicago World’s Fair
Step into True Colors—a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime
While attending the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, Winnifred Wylde believes she witnessed a woman being kidnapped. She tries to convince her father, an inspector with the Chicago police, to look into reports of mysterious disappearances around the White City. Inspector Wylde tries to dismiss her claims as exaggeration of an overactive imagination, but he eventually concedes to letting her go undercover as secretary to the man in question—if she takes her pistol for protection and Jude Thorpe, a policeman, for bodyguard.
Will she be able to expose H. H. Holmes’s illicit activity, or will Winnifred become his next victim?

My Review
I never used to read historical fiction, but since I’ve been part of a book review/blogging team, I’ve had the opportunity to branch out from my normal genre—and it’s been such a blessing!
Grace Hitchcock’s debut novel The White City was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. The characters were rich and unexpected (especially for the time period) and the setting was fresh. As with most historical fictions, I was educated on history I knew nothing about. The story takes place during the Chicago World’s Fair, and the key mystery comes from a true life criminal and his crimes. I love that.
Winnifred Wylde has an active imagination and a deep desire for adventure, fueled by her love of mystery novels. Her father, Chicago police chief, has his hands full in an attempt to get her married off to someone in high society who will be keep her happy and out of trouble. But Winnifred has a mind of her own.
In walks decorated New York City detective, Jude Thorpe, now working for Winnifred’s father on the Chicago police force. In an attempt to keep her safe, while at the same humoring her proclivity for seeing a crime around every corner, Winnifred’s father gives Jude charge of keeping her out of trouble.
Both Winnifred and Jude were easy to fall in love with. And although it’s a pretty sure bet that the hero and heroine of any romance novel will end up together, I still found myself rooting for them. Winnifred isn’t the typical damsel-in-distress type, as she pushes the limits of what’s proper and expected for a woman in that time period. And Jude—well, he’s the dashing hero with a backstory of his own.
If I have any negatives to list, it would be just one—the story drags a little in the middle as the mystery seems to stall a bit. But it’s worth it.
I received a promo copy of the book for reviewing purposes, but the opinions are my own.
